Coghill House is a renovation to an existing pre-war timber cottage located in the bayside suburb of Manly, QLD.

The clients aspirations are big and the home seeks to do a lot with a tight budget. With these things in mind the design sets itself up to be nothing more than a simple Fibre Cement box, but with considered planning and careful detailing to create a beautiful and contemporary addition to the old house.

The proposed works introduce a new addition to the rear of the existing house that follows the existing roof line. The new works are very simple in both form and detailing in an effort to keep costs low and construction time short.

The new extension houses a new bathroom, kitchen and living space that opens out to a rear outdoor room connected to the yard. A series of large bleacher steps provide additional socialising opportunities, all while under the cover of a green canopy.

The hero of this project is the series of spaces that directly link the old house to the yard;

Kitchen to Outdoor Room to Bleachers to Lawn.

This sequence of spaces continues a social dialogue that encourages grandkids to run through the house and straight outside to enjoy the beautiful bay side climate.
