Goodwin House sits on an idyllic site located directly across from the Cairns Botanic Gardens. The house enjoys a north-south aspect that is surrounded by tropical vegetation. The original post modern fibro shack has been carefully cracked open to create a contemporary relationship with the site.

The bones of the house have been kept in tack while large insertions of timber joinery allow the house to capture breezes and ventilate the heart of the home.

A centrally located kitchen is reinvigorated with a 360 degree clerestory skylight. The kitchen becomes the focal point of the plan as all lines of circulation lead to and through it.

Rich veneer joinery runs throughout the house and leads from inside to out, creating larger entertaining spaces as thresholds open and disappear. The landscape beyond plays a key roll in making the house feel larger than it is and it plays as a backdrop to everyday life.

To the rear of the house a granny flat is inserted to create a private courtyard. This addition can be used as a guest house or rented out to holiday makers of the Cairns Region.

The courtyard enjoys a northern aspect and becomes a place for relaxation and reflection. A plunge pool is nestled into the landscape and offers a moment of delight.
